I run the Experiment Foundation and interview researchers about their ideas to make science better.
Prior to that, I co-founded Sofar (an ocean technology company), OpenROV (an underwater drone company), and Open Explorer (now Field Notes, a community of professional and amateur explorers around the world). I’m a Schmidt Futures Innovation Fellow. In the past, I’ve been a member of NOAA’s Ocean Exploration Advisory Board, a TED Senior Fellow, and a National Geographic Emerging Explorer.
I wrote a book: Zero to Maker. I write more frequently here. All my expeditions and adventures are documented on National Geographic's Field Notes.
Prior to ocean tech and underwater drones, I managed a sailing school in Berkeley. I still sail as much as I can. If you want to hear the long story, there’s a good interview on NPR's TED Radio Hour.
